Dr. Sheng Chun Chang 張勝鈞醫師

Pharmacy, Chinese medicine, hospital practice and brain–mind sciences

Dr. Sheng Chun Chang is a licensed Chinese medicine physician and registered pharmacist in Taiwan, a graduate of the School of Pharmacy at National Taiwan University, a former physician in gynecology and pediatrics at the Department of Chinese Medicine, Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, with advanced studies at the Graduate Institute of Brain and Mind Sciences, National Taiwan University College of Medicine.

His pharmacy training built a foundation in pharmacology, disease and modern medicine; entering Chinese medicine practice, he came to understand disease again through the channels, Qi and blood, overall state, and individual patient differences. Hospital work brought these different medical backgrounds back to the patients he faced every day, within the wider medical context.

After beginning his studies of Zhu’s Scalp Acupuncture under Professor Ming Qing Zhu in 2008, Dr. Chang likewise moved through long clinical learning from outpatient clinics to emergency departments, critical care and general wards. His later studies in brain and mind sciences provided another lens for observing neurology, cognition, movement and physical function.

What does the patient in front of me actually need right now?

Starting from the patient’s immediate needs, function and treatment priorities before deciding a direction of treatment matters more than simply memorising a fixed correspondence between disease names and treatment zones. Today’s patients are often receiving Chinese medicine, Western medicine, medication, investigations or rehabilitation all at once, so clinical judgement also requires understanding the patient’s overall medical context — considering, on top of existing treatment, what intervention would best help the patient right now.
