Dr. Ru Shan Shy 施如珊醫師

From hospital-based Chinese medicine to brain science and clinical education

Dr. Ru Shan Shy is a licensed Chinese medicine physician in Taiwan, a graduate of the Post-Baccalaureate Program in Chinese Medicine at China Medical University, and a former physician in the Division of Chinese Acupuncture Medicine at China Medical University Hospital, with advanced studies at a brain science institute.

Her training and work at China Medical University and its affiliated hospital shaped her Chinese medicine learning within a hospital environment where Chinese and modern medicine operated side by side. Beyond clinical training in Chinese medicine, she also studied in Western medicine departments, working with laboratory testing, imaging, inpatient care and cross-disciplinary practice. At the same time, teaching from senior Chinese medicine physicians in pulse diagnosis, herbal formulas, traditional acupuncture, Fei Jing Zou Qi, classical needling technique, and visual and four-method diagnosis gradually built her clinical foundations for treating patients.

From 2008, Dr. Shy studied Zhu’s Scalp Acupuncture under Professor Ming Qing Zhu; from 2013, she continued in ongoing clinical learning and practice, taking part in clinical teaching, ZSA curriculum design, and the organisation and development of the course series. Years of bedside learning extended from outpatient clinics into emergency departments, critical care and general wards. Professor Zhu’s teaching also emphasised cross-referencing Chinese medicine clinical reasoning with modern medical information, so that students facing complex patients could understand the channels, Qi and blood, and acupuncture treatment, while integrating disease state, investigations, imaging, medication and the overall medical context into their judgement.

Her subsequent advanced studies in brain science gave her another lens for understanding the nervous system, brain–body function and functional change. Years alongside Professor Zhu, and working with Dr. Zhi Yun Peng and Dr. Moyee Siu on ZSA’s clinical, teaching and educational activities, gradually built her ability to translate clinical experience into curriculum design and teaching. Today, Dr. Shy places particular emphasis on organising complex clinical thinking into a learning system students can understand, practise, repeat and use to build ability step by step.
